What Progress Can Look Like for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Learners
Shows that progress may include confidence, independence, wellbeing and communication, not only qualifications.
Welcome to The Ark Specialist College
The Ark Specialist College is a specialist post-16 further education provision for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We work closely with learners, families, carers and local authorities to create a calm, structured and supportive environment where each young person can develop at their own pace.
Every learner is different, so our support is not based on one fixed model. We take time to understand the person, their strengths, their needs, their communication style and their EHCP outcomes. From there, we build an Independent Learning Plan that supports progress in education, independence, wellbeing and skills for adulthood.
"Every session and every relationship at The Ark Specialist College is focused on helping young people build a safer, happier and more independent adult life."
We support young people aged 16 and over who benefit from a smaller, structured and highly personalised learning environment. Learners with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) receive consistent, individualised support to help them feel safe, understood, valued and ready to engage in learning.
Structured routines, clear communication and sensory-aware support to help autistic learners feel settled and confident.
Support with communication using individual approaches, including visual support, AAC, PECS, Makaton and other suitable tools.
Practical and accessible learning for young people with mild to moderate learning disabilities.
Holistic support for learners with complex needs, including emotional, physical, sensory, communication and learning needs.
Flexible learning routes for young people who need more than a standard college setting can usually provide.
Our Framework
Our approach is guided by the Four Preparation for Adulthood outcome areas, giving each learnerβs journey clear purpose, direction and meaningful outcomes.
We support learners to understand their health, wellbeing, emotions, routines and self-care. This includes physical health, mental wellbeing, emotional regulation and healthy daily habits.
Learners build practical skills for daily life, including travel training, money skills, household tasks, personal safety, decision making and confidence in everyday routines.
We help learners build positive relationships, reduce isolation and take part in their local community through social activities, volunteering and supported community learning.
Learners are supported to explore work, enterprise, volunteering and supported employment routes. The focus is on meaningful next steps that match each learnerβs ability, interest and confidence.
Strong partnership is at the heart of every placement. Whether you are a parent, carer, local authority officer, social worker or EHCP professional, we work with you in an open and practical way.
